Three sounds of ed

Over the past few weeks, my little girl has been exploring words that end with “ed”. We learned that when we see “ed” at the end of the word, is signals that the verb happened in the past. We also learned that there are three different sounds that those two simple letters make. d, t, and id. As she has worked on reading these words, we focused more on her background knowledge and if it sounds right. But for us adults or those that are learning English as a second language and don’t know what sounds right, here are the rules for figuring out which sound to use when you come to a word that ends in –ed.

3 sounds of ed rules

  1. Let’s start with an easy one. When a word ends with t or d, the “ed” makes the id sound.

Here are some examples: needed, tasted, planted, decided, mended, hated, rusted, waited, blasted, ended

2. This one is a little harder. When the final sound of the root word is voiced, the “ed” makes the “d” sound. Voiced means that you can feel your throat vibrate when your hand is placed on your neck. Letters that make a voiced sound are b, g, l, m, n, r, v, z, and th.

check out these examples: grilled, played, smiled, closed, shelled, opened, spilled, enjoyed, changed, cleaned, ganged

3. Finally, we get to the “ed” that makes the “t” sound. When the final sound of the root word is unvoiced the “ed” makes the “t” sound. Unvoiced means there is no vibration when those letters are spoken. Some examples of unvoiced letters are f, k, p, s, x, ch, th, and sh.

Here are a few examples: masked, worked, fished, cooked, asked, kissed, blocked, stopped, kicked, liked, honked, and walked.

I have learned that my little girl needs time to learn every new sound. Each week we learn a new sound and one way of making that sound. It is a slow process, but I have found that for her to be successful, she needs it broken down like this.

After spending three weeks working through these different sounds, I decided it was time to put them all together and let her do a sort. I gave her nine words with “ed”, and let her decide which sound the “ed” would make.

Now comes the sorting.

Simply, have your child cut out the words.

Then, let them read them aloud to you. If they struggle with the correct sound, you can show them the clues on page 2. You can also put the word in a sentence and see if they can use it correctly in context. We had to do this numerous times as my little girl worked her way through these words.

Once, they read it correctly have them glue the word under the correct sound.

And that is it. A quick and easy way to review the three sounds of “ed”.
