Hopefully by now your grade 4 student is a confident reader who enjoys reading. But sometimes, it can still be difficult to pick really fun books to read without a  fourth grade reading list to read! Continue to grow their love of reading with this 4th grade reading list filled with exciting books hand picked for you!.

If your child is not enjoying reading, make sure they are reading good books and that they are reading books at their level – if they aren’t ready for a book it is just going to be a frustrating experience).  Sometimes kids think they don’t like to read because they aren’t reading books that are fun for them. That is where this reading list for 4th grade comes in!

With so many books out there sometimes it can be difficult to discern okay books from good books from really GREAT books! That is where we come in with our fourth grade reading books

The following books are listed by 4th grade reading level for your convenience! So when your child starts 4th grade (or is at a 4th grade reading level), just start reading books that interest them from the top to the bottom.

Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing was written by Judy Blume. This story follows 9 year old Peter as he struggles with all the mischief that his 2 year old brother Fudge causes.

The Bears on Hemlock Mountain was written by Alice Dalgliesh. Jonathan has always been told that there aren’t any bears on Hemlock Mountain. But a trip over the mountain on his own may prove that to be untrue.

Because of Winn-Dixie was written by Kate DiCamillo. When India Opal Buloni comes home with a dog named Winn-Dixie, her life changes in all kinds of ways.

Jumanji by was written by Chris Van Allsburg. This adventurous story follows a pair of kids who start playing a curious board game that brings dangers into the real world, and won’t end until the game is complete.

Carry On, Mr. Bowditch was written by Jean Lee Latham. This book follows the journey of Nathaniel Bowditch from childhood, through his years dedicated to learning about the sea, and eventually his publication of the “Sailor’s Bible”.

100 Cupboards was written by N. D. Wilson. When a young boy named Henry uncovers mysterious doors behind the plaster on his bedroom wall, he discovers all kinds of different worlds.

Black Beauty was written by Anna Sewell. This classic story follows a young horse through many owners, and shows the emotional trials from the perspective of the horse.

Five Little Peppers and How They Grew was written by Margaret Sidney. The Pepper family faces lots of struggles, but the courage of the widowed Mrs. Pepper and her five children shows readers how to face adversity with good cheer.

The Good Master was written by Kate Seredy. Join Jancsi and Kate as they share a summer full of adventures on the Hungarian plains.

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane was written by Kate DiCamillo. This story follows the adventures of a china rabbit named Edward Tulane after he gets lost from his owner, a young girl named Abilene.

Mary Poppins was written by Dr. P. L. Travers. Follow the adventures of Mary Poppins and the Banks family, as she brings a little magic to 17 Cherry Tree Lane.

Many Moons was written by James Thurber. A sick young princess knows that the moon can make her feel better, but can anyone figure out how to bring it to her?

The Original Adventures of Hank the Cowdog was written by John R. Erickson. When Hank, the Head of Ranch Security finds himself the number one suspect of a chicken murder, he becomes an outlaw.

Number the Stars was written by Lois Lowry. This story follows 10 year old Annemarie Johansen and her family as they take in her best friend and watch the Danish Resistance smuggle Jewish families out of Denmark before they are found by German troops.

The Great Turkey Walk was written by Kathleen Karr. Follow 15 year old Simon Green as he tries to herd a bunch of turkeys from Missouri to Denver in order to make his place in the world of 1860.

Leepike Ridge was written by N. D. Wilson. In this adventure story, a young boy named Tom runs from home and floats down the stream, finding himself tossed under Leepike Ridge and facing adventures he’d never dreamed possible.

A Wrinkle in Time was written by Madeleine L’Engle. Follow Meg, her little brother Charles Wallace, and her friend Calvin as they venture through space and time to find Meg’s missing father.

On My Honor was written by Marion Dane Bauer. Joel and his friend Tony  are two young boys who decide to go swimming in the forbidden river. When Tony goes missing, Joel is forced to face his guilt and fears and decide what to do next.

From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler was written by E.L. Konigsburg. When Claudia decides to run away, she decides to run to somewhere, instead of away from somewhere. Join her and her brother as they run right into a big mystery.

The Tale of Despereaux was written by Kate DiCamillo. Follow a little mouse named Despereaux Tilling and his friends as they go on a journey that takes them to magical places.

The Lightening Thief was written by Rick Riordan. This story introduces readers to Percy Jackson, a young boy who thinks of himself as a normal kid, until he finds out that his father was Poseidon, and he is actually a demigod.

The Family Under the Bridge was written by Natalie Savage Carlson. This heartwarming story follows Armand, an old man who enjoys his solitary life, but soon meets a group of cold and hungry children and starts caring for them.

Gentle Ben was written by Walt Morey. Mark Andersen is lonely living in the Alaskan wilderness after the loss of his brother. But he soon finds friendship in an Alaskan brown bear named Ben.

All-of-a-Kind Family was written by Sydney Taylor. This book introduces readers to 5 sisters growing up together in New York City, finding adventures, playing make believe, and celebrating their Jewish faith with their parents.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was written by C. S. Lewis. This book from the Chronicles of Narnia series follows four siblings named Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy, as they step through a wardrobe and find themselves in the magical world of Narnia.

Miracles on Maple Hill was written by Virginia Sorensen. When young Marly’s father returns home from being a prisoner of war, he is different. Marly’s family decides to move to Maple Hill to heal and come together again.

The Sign of the Beaver was written by Elizabeth George Speare. This novel follows a young boy named Matt who is attempting to protect his family’s cabin in the wilderness. When he meets a young boy from the Beaver clan, he starts to learn about the Beaver clan’s way of life.

Where the Red Fern Grows was written by Wilson Rawl. This story follows a young boy named Billy and his two dogs as they become an unstoppable hunting team, and learn lessons about love, life, and loss.

The Trumpet of the Swan was written by E. B. White. Louis is a trumpeter swan who can’t trumpet. How can he get the attention of Serena, the swan that he loves?

The Toothpaste Millionaire was written by Jean Merrill. When young Rufus Mayflower decides to try making a gallon of toothpaste for the same price as a tube from the store, he ends up creating a lot more than he planned on.

Old Yeller was written by Fred Gipson. This story follows a young boy named Travis who is left to take care of his family’s farm in Texas, and finds help in the stray dog who becomes his loyal friend.
