Plant Activity for Kids
Looking for an EPIC plant activity for kids? Try these stem activities for toddlers, kindergartners, grade 1, and grade 2 students. In this planting seeds with preschoolers children will learn about germination, what seeds need to grow, and make a fun STEM project too. This grass house is simple to make with endless personalization. Whether you are a parent, teacher, summer stem camp leader, or homeschooler – you will love adding thies seed activity to your botany unit, spring activities for kids, or summer activities for kids too.
Grass House
Start by gathering a few simple supplies you may already have on hand at home!
- 4-8 plain sponges – any color
- scissors
- toothpicks
- Hot glue gun (optional but makes construction quick)
- Plate
- seeds (any grass seed that goes quickly such as wheat berries, chia, or alfalfa seeds sprout quickly)
Plant experiments for kids
The first part is the STEM part. You will design you sponge house. Once you have an idea in mind, I suggest using a sharpie marker to mark where you want to cut.
STEM Project for Kids
Cut the spone to complete your design.
Seed activities for kindergarten
Use toothpicks and or hot glue gun to hold the walls and roof to your seed house together.
HINT: Make sure not to put hot glue on the outside surface where the seeds will need to send roots down into the spongue holes.
Summer Activity for Kids
Your house can be as simple or complex as you want it to be. Much of the design complexity will come from the age of your children. Upper elementary age students will creat much more complex houses. Younger students may not even want it to be a 3D house project.
Seed House
We made a “lip” around the outside to make the seed grow as a barrier. The seed will stay and grow on any relatively flat surface.
Planting seeds with preschoolers
Start by watering your spongue house to get it good and wet. Now snooth out your chosen seeds and place on your house.
Stem activity
Spray your grass house several times a day with water bottle. How long it takes to grow will depend on the type of seed and watering, but it should sprout in a couple days.
Stem activities for toddlers
Within a week it should be super cute! It will keep growing as long as you keep it in sunlight and water it. Kids can use it as a house for fairies or forest animals if they like.
Seed germination activity for preschoolers
This is such a fun, hands-on plant project for kids of all ages! Plus I love that it also incorporates a STEM actvity for kids to engineer their own grass houses too!
