Human Heart for Kids: 2 Fun Heart Models plus Worksheets

Human Heart for Kids

Our heart is an amazing organ! Help children discover all about the heart for kids with this fun, engaging, and memorable human heart for kids lesson. Besides lots of interesting information, children will make a heart science project to demonstrate how the heart pumps. We also make a playdough heart model and completed the free printable heart worksheets. This is just one of our human body activities as part of our human body for kids unit studying anatomy for grade 1, grade 2, grade 33, grade 4, grade 5, grade 6, and garde 7 students.  Whether you are a parent, teacher, or homeschooler you will love these heart activities to make learning about our bodies fun and memorable for kids. How to Make a Heart Model

We made heart science projects so y kids would understand the diffent parts and functions of the heart as well as how it works. Both of the heart science projects are simple and easy to try with kids of all ages. You will need a couple simple materials you probably already have on hand:

• mason jar (or other container)
• water
• food coloring
• balloon
• toothpick
• straws
• playdough – red and blue

The Heart for Kids

We started our lesson by watching this video on the human heart to get a quick overview about what we were learning about. We learned that the heart is an organ, made up of very strong muscle, that pumps blood through the body. It is the main organ of the cardiovascular system; it carries substances to and from all parts of the body in the blood. Our  hearts are about the size of our fist and pear-shaped. You can find our heart high in the chest, slightly to our left. An adult’s heart weighs about  8-12 ounces and pumps blood by squeezing and relaxing in a regular rhythm. We call this rhythm a heartbeat. Your heart beats an average of 70 times per minute pumpking more than 4 quarts of blood through your heart every minute.

Then we dove in deeper with these fun heart books for kids.

Heart Science Project

We started by making the human heart playdough project so kids could learn the parts of the heart in a fun, engaging way. We used the parts of the heart diagram (in the pack below) to guide us. You may want to use a toothpick and paper to label the parts or play a fun review game to recall which part is which.

Our hearts are divided into two parts  – right and left halves. Each half is divided into two hollow sections called chambers. We call each of these upper chambers  the atrium. The lower chambers are called ventricles. We use blood in heart models to represent the  right side of the heart as the blood comes from the body carrying waste product called carbon dioxide. Then the blood moves into the right ventricle and into the lungs. In the lungs, blood picks up oxygen and releases (gets rid of) carbon dioxide. The fresh, oxygen-rich blood enters the heart’s left atrium and on to the left ventricle which pumps the blood throughout the body to nourish and give energy to the rest of our bodies.

Then we reviewed what we’d learned with the free heart worksheets. The human body worksheets included a variety of activities including:

• Parts of the Heart Worksheet – label the heart worksheet
• Color the Human Heart red and blue to distinguish between the right and left side of the heart
• Human Heart Coloring Pages – Identify the major parts of the human heart by coloring by code to identify the: Aorta, Left Atrium, Left Ventricle, Pulmonary Artery, Right Atrium, and Right Ventricle

Human Body Activities for Kids

Finally, we made a working heart pump model. As you can guess, this was the kids’ favorite part.

• Fill a jar  halfway with water and add some red food coloring.
• Take your balloon and cut the neck of it off.
• Stretch out the top part  and put it over the top of the jar so it is taut. Save the neck part as well.
• Use a sharp toothpick and poke a hole in the top of the balloon once towards one side of the jar.
• Make a second hole about an inch away from the first. Try to make the hole as small as you can.
• Take your straws and push one through each hole with the bendy part sticking out the top. You might have to push hard, but they should pop through. Take the neck of the balloon that you set aside and use it to cover the opening of one straw sticking out of the cup.
• Have your child push up and down on the balloon, between the two straws. Pumping quickly and firmly works best. You will be able to see the blood go up the open-ended straw and come out into the cup!!
