Division puzzles

Division is an upper level math skill that is important for children to learn. Some children learn this skill as early as 1st grade, while others it won’t be until 4th grade. No matter what grade, it is important that children learn this math skill. Math can be difficult for some children, though, so making sure that activities are engaging is important!

Division is breaking a number up into an equal number of parts. For example, take 20 and split it into 4 groups, there will be 5 in each group. This is 20 divided by 4 equals 5.

Dividing by 5s is actually slightly easy. If the number ends in a 0 or 5, it is divisible by 5. If it doesn’t end in a 0 or 5, it is not divisible, and there will be a remainder.

Ten is even more simple. If the number ends in a 0, it may divide by 10. If not, it will not and there will be a remainder.

The prep for this puzzle is super easy. Print the included pages and cut out each of the puzzle pieces. There are few different puzzle designs to help make it not as simple to just put the matches together.

You can choose to laminate the puzzle pieces if you are using in a classroom or want to use it more than once, the lamination will help with keeping the puzzle pieces safe and not ripped.

You will see that on once side of the puzzle is the answer and on the other side is the division problem. Each problem is based on either 5 or 10. Included are all combinations of division problems for number 5 and 10 through 100. So we’ve included 10 divided by 5 all the way up to 100 divided by 10.

You can choose to only include certain puzzle pieces as well. Meaning, if you only want to work on 5’s, take the 10’s puzzle pieces out. If you don’t want to work as high as 100 divided by 10, take out the higher numbers.

Mix up all the puzzle pieces on the table. You can put the division problems on one side and the answers on the other side, of the table. Or you can mix them all up. Children will find a problem, read it outloud, solve it and then find the answer puzzle piece that matches.

Once they are all done, they are done. Or you can do it again.

You could also do this with a team or small groups. They can either work together to solve all of the puzzles or they could compete with each other to see who can solve the most in the fastest amount of time. Along the same lines, you could time your child to see if they can do it faster than they did before. Healthy competition is always fun!
