Types of Syllables

We have learned that for a vowel to be a short vowel, it must be closed in. In other words, a consonant must follow the vowel. We see that in simple words like cat and hat. But even two-syllable words follow this pattern. rab/bit

Then we learned that there are two ways of making a long vowel. We have long vowels with the magic e syllable that shows up at the end of a word like “or/nate” or “com/pete”. And an open door syllable, a syllable that ends in a vowel, will also make the long vowel sound. Words like ro/bot or ta/ble are just a few suggestions. Of course, we can also make long vowels with vowel teams like ai (plain), or ea (each). Vowel teams also make other sounds like the oy in joy.  Then we focused on r-controlled vowels. You don’t normally hear the vowel in these words just the r.

  • ar – car, far, jar
  • er, ir, ur – her, girl, church
  • or – ornate, for, horse

Consonant le Syllable

Now we are working on reading consonant + le syllables. Now this syllable is a little different in that the vowel does not make a sound. Really, the only reason the “e” is there is to fulfill the rule that there must be a vowel in every syllable.

Basically this syllable, also know as the final stable syllable, does exactly what its name suggests. There is a consonant and that is followed by the letters “le”. And that is it. Now there are some tidbits that help your little ones on how to spell these fun words, and you can find those here. But for today, it is all about reading!
