Wondering why we use a special type of magnets? Neodymium magnets are the strongest permanent magnets commercially available, anywhere in the world. So they allow the magnets to work well through the bottle to allow students to see cause and effect as they experiemnt with the power of magnets and a magneti field.

Note: As these are strong magnets please be carefuly that they do not pinch skin. Magnets should never be ingested or put in children’s mouth. Please only use magnets under close adult supervision. Keep magnets at least 20cm away from sensitive electronic and storage devices such as credit cards, televisions, pace makers, phones, computer hard drives, etc.

Magnets are used to make a tight seal on doors such as refrigerators and freezers. They power electronics like speakers in stereos, earphones, and televisions. We use them in a compass, doorbells, microphones, credit cards, computers, and countless other objects. Doctors use magents in scanning machines called MRIs (magnetic resonance imagers) which allow them to look inside a persons body.

Explain that the crust of the Earth’s core generates its own magnetic field caused by currents of electricity that flow in the molten core. We can measure that field at the surface. So we could say that the Earth is, therefore, a “magnet.” Your kids are probably now wondering why we need Earth’s magnetic field because, let’s face it, kids are pretty smart! Well, Earth’s magnetic field plays a very important role – it protects us from the solar winds, creates the magnetic poles we use for navigation and guidance (from compasses to planes). Interstingly, the play between the solar winds and the magnetic field on Earth is what causes the beautiful northern lights!
