Dry Erase Marker Experiment
I love it when my kids are excited about learning and beg to learn more. Sciece is one of those subjects that, when done well, really captures the hearts and minds of kids! So I am always on the lookout for new and exciting science projects that will make them excited about learning and get them eager to experiment. This dry erase marker experiment is just that cool science activity! Kids will be amazed at how the picture and water truly float on water and move. You don’t want to miss this dry erase marker water experiment with preschoolers, kindergartners, grade 1, grade 2, grade 3, grade 4, grade 5, and grade 6 students.

You only need a few simple materials to try this fun science activity:
- glass plate, bowl, or picture frame
- dry erase marker
- Water
Floating dry erase marker experiment
This seems to simple to work, but I promise you – it does! And it is SO COOL!
Start by drawing a simple picture on the glass with any color (s) of dry erase markers. A stick figure is a good one to start.

Slowly pour water onto the plate or into the bowl slowly to lift up the drawing.
We tinted our water blue so you could see the water being poured.

Swirl the water around to make the picture dance and move.

Dry erase markers on glass experiment
Wondering what is gong on? The marker leaves behind mixture of pigments and a type of alcohol mixed together. The alcohol dissolves and the pigments are left behind as a solid. Glass is so smooth that the solid slides right off when it gets wet!
