Strata Recipe
This is a family recipe my mom used while I was growing up. She made this simple strata recipe every December; it was our tradition to have it every Christmas morning. Not only was this breakfast strata super yummy and satisfying, but it was an easy make ahead breakfast casserole. My mom would grab a couple slices of the Christmas ham and throw together this egg breakfast, cover it, and refrigerate it overnight. Christmas morning my mom would put this strata breakfast casserole in the oven while we started opening presents – just when we were done, it was time to eat! I love that this overnight breakfast is so quick to make with no work in the morning – letting Mom be part of the fun!
Breakfast strata
All you need to whip up this yummy breakfast recipe are a few simple ingredients:
- ham, chopped
- cheddar cheese, shredded
- eggs
- dry mustard
- sliced bread
- milk
- Salt & pepper to taste
Egg Breakfast
Start by greasing a 9 x 13 rectangular pan with butter or shortening spray.
Now tear up 12 slices of bread and put them randomly in the prepared casserole dish. You can use whatever bread you like – we like to use whole grain wheat bread to make it not only healthier, but heartier and filling too!

In a medium size mixing bowl whisk together 6 eggs, 2 and 1/2 cups milk (we use organic whole milk), 2 teaspoons dry mustard, plus salt and pepper. Now mix in 1 cup shredded cheddar or pepperjack cheese plus about 1 cup of sliced ham.
We like to use ham since we have it on hand from the Christmas ham, but you can use bacon, sausage, make it only cheese based, or add some cooked peppers and onions if you prefer.
